Welcome to the

Hobart Volunteer Court Support Scheme

Going to Court?

What will happen?

Know what to do?

Going to Court can be a bewildering and frightening experience, whether you are an applicant, a defendant, a victim, a witness or simply coming along to support someone else.

The Hobart Volunteer Court Support Scheme was established to help overcome some of the practical problems which arise when you go to Court.  This free Service is staffed by volunteers from the community who understand how confusing Court can be and want to make your trip there as simple and non-threatening as possible.

Who can use the Service?
Anyone attending the Magistrates Court (Liverpool Street, Hobart) can seek assistance:

  • victims of crime
  • applicants
  • defendants
  • witnesses
  • friends & relatives.

How we can help you

  • show you which Court you will appear in
  • explain Court procedure
  • tell you where you can get legal advice
  • arrange for an interpreter to attend Court with you should you need one
  • assist with filling out forms for Legal Aid etc.
  • explain in plain english the meaning of any orders given by the Magistrate
  • show you where to get copies of court orders or bail documents and where to pay fines.

Hours of Service

A volunteer worker is rostered to work at the Courts every weekday from 9.30am until approximately 11.30am.  You will be able to recognise us from our badges, which display the Court Support Scheme logo and our name.  Our office is located on the first floor of the Court complex near the Legal Aid Office.
